KGOC (GB) visit to Ireland — The Karmann Ghia Car Club GB
Nine intrepid members in five cars set sail for the first club visit to Ireland. As a club we have travelled to many other overseas destinations but always in an easterly direction – this was our attempt to reverse the flow!
Planning commenced over a year earlier when I came across GOIVCC on the internet as I looked at various options to base a week around. A short email to Eileen followed, who proved very helpful and the scene was set – we would base our visit around joining the weekend event in September 2016!
On Tuesday 6th five cars set off from locations near Lichfield, Preston, Stockport, Chester and Lanark, and after meeting up at Enfield for the first evening stop, one party set off to visit friends in the southern part whilst the rest of us made our way to Sligo, and then part of the Wild Atlantic Way, taking in the coast around to Westport and then down to Galway, before travelling across on Friday to stay at the Glenview Hotel, our base for the weekend. Fortunately by the time we got there the rain that day had finally ceased!
No sooner had we landed than Eileen was in touch to arrange to send the minibus round to whisk us all round to the Grove bar for the evening’s entertainment! Great opportunity to take in some local culture.
Saturday morning dawned bright and clear and there was the fantastic gathering of all the participants lining up in the car park – a fantastic sight. What struck me was how relaxed the atmosphere was, even with over 70 cars trying to leave at the same time, but we all managed to make the first stop. The motorcycle escort operated pretty well to keep us all on track too – great idea.
Lunch was taken at West Wicklow House in Blessington and straight after the chance was seized to visit the adjoining Dunnes Store! Then it was back to the Grove Bar via a short stop in the Wicklow mountains, (where our group celebrated the birthday of one of our members with an impromptu round of scones) for various awards to be distributed, before getting back to the Glenview.
The venue for the evening meal was brilliant and the dancing display and entertainment was absolutely first rate.
Sunday whilst being rather overcast and windy gave us the chance to visit the tractor and farm machinery at Coolakay Heritage Centre followed by the chance to display our historic vehicles as part of the Enniskerry Victorian Field Day.
We all found the warmth, friendliness and hospitality most noticeable, nothing seemed too much trouble for Eileen, Anne, Mick, Charlotte and the rest of the team. We had a great experience, and were honoured to be able to join a well organised weekend event that operated in such a relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended!
THE 2016 ANNUAL LIAM KELLY MEMORIAL GARDEN OF IRELAND RUN 9TH TO 11TH SEPTEMBER 2016.
The Garden of Ireland Vintage Car Club are forging ahead with their plans for the prestigious Annual Liam Kelly Memorial Garden of Ireland Vintage Car Run, previously referred to as “The Annual Garden of Ireland Run” which ironically was the brainchild of the late Liam. This event in its entirety has grown at a phenomenal rate and the club are looking forward to hosting the visiting clubs from England, Northern Ireland along with our visitors from New Zealand, America and Brittany.
Some of these clubs will arrive days prior to the event which will afford them the chance to visit other areas of tourism not covered on the run, however, the event management team have wisely chosen a route that will showcase many of the scenic views of the mountains, lakes etc. Events such as this take much planning and what you will see on the day is down to the hard work of our dedicated committee members. The schedule for the above weekend is as follows:
Friday 9th September: Complimentary welcome reception at The Grove Bar commencing at 9.30pm – Music by Skin The Goat
Saturday 10th September: Run will start at 10.30am from The Glenview Hotel [exit 9 off the N11 – Dinner Dance will commence at 8.30 pm
Sunday 11th September: Visit to Coolakay Heritage Centre, Enniskerry followed by a visit to the Enniskerry Victorian Field Day.
